About Dance Trips

  • Vienna Ball Season with Us: A Journey of Music, Movement, and Elegance

Each winter, Vienna transforms. Music fills its palaces, chandeliers glow above polished dance floors, and centuries-old traditions come alive as the city enters its legendary ball season.

Our journey is not simply a trip to Vienna—it is an invitation to step into this living tradition. To move with the music. To feel the rhythm of the waltz in your body. To experience the city not only as a visitor, but as a participant in one of Europe’s most enchanting cultural rituals.

Over the course of five to seven days, we guide you into the world of Viennese ball culture through movement, music, and meaningful cultural experiences. The journey centers around one of Vienna’s most iconic events: either the Wiener Kaffeesiederball (Coffeehouse Owners’ Ball) in the imperial Hofburg Palace or the world-famous Wiener Opernball at the Vienna State Opera.

For guests who wish to experience both events, we also offer support and planning to help you move seamlessly between them.

    Arriving in Rhythm

We arrive in Vienna two days before the ball, allowing you time to settle in, overcome jet lag, and begin attuning yourself to the atmosphere of the city. These first days gently guide you into Vienna’s rhythm—through movement practices, cultural exploration, and moments of reflection that prepare you for the experience ahead.

Your accommodation, chosen independently with our guidance and tailored to your preferences and budget, becomes your personal sanctuary throughout the journey.

The Magic of the Viennese Balls

The Wiener Kaffeesiederball, held in the magnificent halls of the Hofburg Palace, is a joyful and vibrant celebration of Vienna’s beloved coffeehouse culture. Elegant yet welcoming, it invites guests into a night of music, conversation, and dancing that continues into the early hours of the morning.

The Wiener Opernball is the crown jewel of the season—an evening of breathtaking grandeur inside the Vienna State Opera House. For one night, the opera stage itself becomes a ballroom where tradition, music, and elegance converge in one of the most spectacular cultural events in the world.

Throughout the journey, we guide you through every step of the experience—from understanding Viennese ball etiquette and dress traditions to preparing your body and confidence on the dance floor. By the time you enter the ballroom, you are not simply observing the tradition—you are part of it.

  • Each Vienna Ball Journey follows a thoughtfully designed rhythm that balances cultural discovery, embodied movement, and spacious time to fully experience the city. While the exact schedule may shift slightly depending on the ball date, seasonal events, and group interests, the structure below reflects the flow of the week and the experiences that are always included.

Throughout the journey, you will be guided through a carefully curated program designed to help you settle into Vienna, connect with its musical and cultural traditions, and prepare for the unforgettable experience of attending a Viennese ball.

    Every itinerary includes:

    • A guided walking tour of Vienna’s historic center to introduce you to the city’s history and atmosphere

    • Daily movement practices such as meditative movement, stretching, or restorative sessions to support grounding and recovery

    • A Viennese Waltz lesson in preparation for the ball

    • A sound immersion experience designed to deepen listening and prepare you for the evening of live music

    • Cultural experiences and museum visits, including highlights of Vienna’s art and heritage

    • Walking and food tours to discover Vienna’s culinary traditions

    • A shared group dinner before the ball

    • Full support and guidance for attending the Viennese ball, including accompaniment and orientation to the evening’s traditions

The itinerary below illustrates how these experiences unfold over the course of the week, creating a journey that blends elegance, culture, and personal experience in the heart of Vienna.

    Day 1: Arrival & Orientation

Welcome to Vienna. After settling into your accommodation, the day begins gently with time to arrive, unpack, and adjust to the rhythm of the city. In the afternoon, we set out together on a guided walking tour through Vienna’s historic center. As we wander past iconic landmarks and hidden corners alike, you’ll begin to absorb the city’s atmosphere, history, and cultural heartbeat—your first step into the story of Vienna.

Day 2: Grounding & Preparing to Dance

The day begins with a meditative movement session and myofascial release to help ease jet lag and reconnect you with your body. This grounding practice prepares you for the experience ahead. In the evening, we gather for a Viennese Waltz lesson. More than a dance class, this is an invitation to step into tradition through movement—learning the elegant rhythms of the waltz in the very city where it was born.

Day 3: Ball Day – Listening & Celebration

Today is the day of the ball, and the schedule is intentionally spacious. The morning is left open for rest and personal preparation. In the early afternoon, we come together for a sound immersion experience—a meditative journey into deep listening designed to center your awareness and attune your senses before the evening’s live music.

Later, we dress and gather for dinner before making our entrance to the ball. From the moment you step into the ballroom to the final waltz of the night, the experience is yours to embrace—an evening of music, elegance, and celebration in one of Vienna’s most cherished traditions.

    Day 4: Recovery & Reflection

After a night of dancing, the morning is yours to rest. In the afternoon, we gather for a gentle restorative movement session designed to release physical tension and help integrate the experience of the previous evening. Later, we head out into the city for relaxed cultural exploration—visiting the Albertina to view its latest exhibition and stopping at a traditional Würstelstand for a taste of everyday Viennese life.

    Day 5: Renewal & Discovery

We begin the day with a light stretching practice to reawaken the body and bring renewed energy after the celebrations. From there, we set out on guided walking and food tours through the city. As we explore Vienna’s neighborhoods, you’ll discover its culinary traditions and hidden gems—an opportunity to savor the city’s flavors, textures, and spirit with fresh eyes and open curiosity.

  • If you're new to the Vienna ball scene, we recommend attending the Kaffeesiederball before considering the Vienna Opera Ball. Here’s why:

The Kaffeesiederball, held at the historic Hofburg Imperial Palace, is a formal yet approachable event, offering a grand Viennese ball experience at a fraction of the cost of the Opera Ball. With ticket prices typically a quarter of those for the Opera Ball, it’s a great entry point. The dress code is more lenient as well—men are required to wear tuxedos (not the more formal tails needed at the Opera Ball), and while both balls mandate floor-length gowns for women, the Kaffeesiederball is more forgiving if you don’t strictly adhere to every rule.

In contrast, the Opera Ball is a highly exclusive event with stringent dress codes and extensive rules. Attendees must follow a detailed guide—literally pages of rules—which can be overwhelming for first-time ball-goers. Additionally, without the proper attire, such as tails for men, you won’t be allowed entry, whereas the Kaffeesiederball offers a more relaxed, yet still elegant, experience.

For these reasons, we only extend invitations to new ball attendees for the Kaffeesiederball. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in Viennese ball culture without the additional pressures of the Opera Ball, which we reserve for experienced guests who are comfortable navigating its complex etiquette.

  • Planning Your Vienna Experience: What’s Included, What to Expect

While this trip is not a fully packaged tour, it is a carefully guided, artistically curated experience—crafted for dancers and creative souls who wish to connect more deeply with Vienna, its ball culture, and their own embodiment.

We do not book flights, accommodations, or most meals for you. Instead, we offer comprehensive, thoughtful guidance on every aspect of the journey. You’ll receive our personalized suggestions for flights, hotels, and cultural experiences that suit a range of travel styles and budgets—whether you’re traveling light and solo or treating yourself to a luxury stay.

What is included in your participation fee is a full arc of intentional group experiences, carefully designed to help you arrive, connect, and dance with presence. We curate a balanced itinerary of social and cultural experiences while leaving you plenty of time to explore on your own :

    • A ball ticket (and opening ceremony seats if available), including group seating arrangements

    • A pre-ball group dinner at a beautiful Viennese restaurant (one meal is included in the trip; all others are independent)

    • Bottled water provided at dinner and at the ball

    • A private Viennese Waltz lesson, taught locally to embody the dance in its birthplace

    • A sound immersion session on the day of the ball to attune your senses to music and stillness

    • Movement sessions throughout the week—for jet lag recovery, post-ball restoration, and reinvigoration

    • Guided walking, culinary, and museum tours, exploring Vienna’s rich cultural and sensory offerings

    • Group leadership and chaperoning, especially on the night of the ball, to help you navigate with ease and grace

The total cost for this immersive experience is $4,000 to $8,000 per person, depending on the ball you attend and select planning elements. This fee reflects the full scope of our guidance, planning, teaching, and hosting—but does not include airfare, accommodations, or additional meals and activities.

We welcome both members of our studio and non-members (with non-member pricing typically a bit higher). Please reach out for guest availability.

    What You'll Arrange Independently

We support you in shaping your personal journey—but you’ll book and pay for the following on your own:

    • Airfare: Round-trip flights to Vienna from the U.S. usually range from $1,200 to $9,000, depending on airline, season, and class of service.

    • Accommodations: Vienna offers a wide range—from boutique hotels and central Airbnbs starting around $150 per night, to luxury stays like Hotel Sacher beginning at $700+.

    • Meals: With the exception of our pre-ball dinner, all meals are on your own. Vienna’s dining scene ranges from cozy cafés to Michelin-starred elegance—plan on spending anywhere from $50 to $500 per day, depending on your taste.

    • Cultural activities: Concerts, museums, and tours often run between $50 and $1,000 per day. We provide you with a Vienna Pass, which is an all-inclusive sightseeing card for your sight seeing journey in Vienna.

A budget-conscious traveler might complete the journey for around $7,000, while a more expansive trip—with luxury accommodations and private experiences—can exceed $20,000.

  • While it's entirely possible to attend a Viennese ball without setting foot on the dance floor (watching the grand performances and festive atmosphere is entertainment enough!), we strongly encourage you to prepare for dancing. The heart of a Viennese ball is the dance floor, and mastering the traditional waltz or other ballroom dances will enhance your experience. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned dancer, there's something magical about gliding across the floor at such an elegant event.

For those in the Chicago area, we highly recommend taking lessons at Ballroom Dance Chicago where we have a ball specific branch of the studio called Waltz Academy. Our expert instructors will equip you with the skills and confidence to shine on the dance floor at any ball—whether in Chicago or Vienna.

If you're not in the Chicago area, we recommend finding a teacher experienced in International style Viennese Waltz and English Waltz as a starting point. These styles are essential for a Viennese ball and will give you solid foundational skills.

  • First, fill out the inquiry form to see if space is still available. We highly recommend inquiring early as our trips have incredibly limited space, with only about 12 people attending each ball, and we often receive more inquiries than we can accommodate.

Be aware that decisions for the February ball season are typically finalized by the end of August. Each year, we negotiate for a limited number of tickets, so early registration is crucial for securing your spot in this exclusive experience.

To attend the 2027 Season, you should be in touch with us no later than May 25th, 2026. Once we have confirmed availability, to ensure your spot, we require a $1,000 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit.

Once we’ve finalized details with the ball staff and have a contract for tickets, we will request the remaining balance, which you will need to submit within one week of the request.

Other than that, the real difficulty is choosing how to spend your time in Vienna - a city steeped in culture and tradition with endless restaurants, museums, galleries, shops, and historical sites vying for your attention.
