The Green Mill: Jazz in Chicago

The Green Mill, Chicago

What’s not to love about this Chicago landmark?

The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge is located on Broadway in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. This jazz venue hosts local, national and international bands and has a rich history with the poetry community and Al Capone’s Chicago outfit.

We really enjoy the Alan Gresik’s Swing Shift Orchestra, as they have a regular shift on Thursday nights when the Green Mill is open for swing dancing. While the dance floor is rather small (probably the smallest in all of Chicago!) and quite crowded, it’s still a bunch of fun to take your special someone out there and here Gresik’s amazing orchestration. Just make sure you show up early in the night to get a spot to sit. If you show up any later than 10 PM, you’ll be elbowing yourself through a crowd all night.

One other thing to note about this Chicago landmark is that it gave Kurt Elling. his start. If you don’t know who he is, well, you should. Check out his website: www.kurtelling.com. He still performs at the Green Mill every now and again and if you’re in Chicago the next time’s he’s there, we can’t recommend anything higher. We recently saw him at City Winery, singing some old Sinatra tunes, but it doesn’t get better than Kurt Elling, Chicago and the Green Mill.
