Most Popular First Wedding Dance Songs

Finding the perfect first dance song is tough! But, familiarizing yourself with the most popular first dance songs can definitely help guide your search. The 7 songs listed in this blog are popular for a reason: each one has a unique style, includes lyrics that are fitting for a wedding, and inspires movement that makes sense for a first dance. Keep in mind, that also means that they’ve been used before...by many, many couples. While we don’t necessarily recommend choosing an “overused” song for your wedding dance, (especially if it’s important to you to have a unique first dance) all of these songs are solid choices for a first dance. So, check out our list of the 7 most popular first dance songs we’ve come across over our 7 years of teaching wedding dance. Maybe it will lead you to “the one!”

  1. You Are The Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne

Pros: Upbeat, entertaining, and exciting! If you want to kick off your dance party wedding, this is a great way to get it done.

Cons: Don’t be fooled by the groovy beat and exciting horns. It has a really tricky beat to dance to. And, the song is very long, so make sure you have some sweet moves to keep everyone interested or just ask your DJ to trim the track to about 2 min and 30 seconds.

  2. The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra

Pros: Classic and fun. If you have a formal wedding, this is a great go-to to keep it fun while still matching the tone of your reception. Plus, everyone knows this song so it will undoubtedly get everyone in the mood to dance.

Cons: As far as first dance songs go, it’s not the most romantic choice. It has a cute sentiment, but it’s also often used for the father/daughter dance.

  3. At Last” by Etta James

Pros: Romance, excitement and passion! This song has all kinds of heart and soul. If you feel like shouting from the rooftops about how much you love your partner, this is the one. Plus, it’s lovely to dance to (not too slow, not too fast) and inspires you to both hold your partner close and also sweep them across the dance floor

Cons: If you’re not planning on taking a good amount of dance lessons, this song might be a little too much. There are a ton of interesting moments in the music to highlight, so if you just plan on doing the high school sway, we hate to say it, but this song might be too cool for you. If you can’t live without “At Last,” definitely consider wedding dance lessons.

  4. Everything” by Michael Buble

Pros: Sweet, fun, and upbeat. Buble’s voice makes even the grouchiest of wedding guests swoon. This song is “the one” if you want to inspire big smiles from your audience.

Cons: If you’re legitimately concerned about having a song that’s overused, stay away from this one! We can’t even keep track of how many times this song has been used for a first dance, plus how many times we’ve heard it on the radio.

  5. Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran

Pros: This song has it all- sexiness, cuteness, sweetness, and passion. I mean, have you seen the music video? Choose Thinking Out Loud if you’re hoping for an intimate moment with your new spouse.

Cons: If you’re not into PDA (I don’t want my Dad to see me getting sexy with my man either), then perhaps consider a different choice.

  6. L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole

Pros: You can’t go wrong with this timeless classic. Instantly recognizable, fun, exciting, and excellent to dance to.

Cons: It’s definitely been done before. But to be honest, we’re happy to help you find a new way to spice up this old classic because it’s so lovable! Similar to “At Last,” you’ll want to make sure you have some sweet moves to bust out to this classic. We recommend swing dance with lots of spins and dips! You’ll need a lot of personality and flair to fit this song.

  7. Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green

Pros: Groovalicious and sensual, this song will definitely get your hips moving.

Cons: Similar to “Thinking Out Loud,” if you’re not into the whole PDA thing, definitely stay away from this one. There are plenty of other motown classics that keep things groovy without crossing the line.
