Make The Most Of Your Wedding Lessons

How Many Lessons Should We Purchase?

As I’m sure you’ve figured out- this depends on your goals! Your instructor has helped you narrow that down, but you may have a few more questions. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

You can always add more lessons at your package rate

  • Pick a starting point and if you want to add more, you can do so at your package rate. Almost all couples add a few more lessons as they go so if you’re between two numbers, go for the overall cheaper rate.

You can use your lesson package for first dances AND parent dances

  • If you want to take a lesson or two with your parents at some point, consider that when making your overall purchase. Because this dance has different expectations than your first dance, it’s common for brides and/or grooms to take anywhere from 1-5 lessons with their parent.

Lessons never expire

  • You can use lessons from the package you purchase to learn for fun after your wedding. If you’re near a price break, consider purchasing the larger amount and using the remaining lessons for fun dates nights as newlyweds.

When Should We Start Our Lessons?

In the event you did not schedule your next lesson, let’s hit a few pointers on how to effectively do so moving forward:

You should start your lessons in the next 2 weeks

  • Even if you feel you have a long timeline before your wedding, our answer remains the same! You are learning a new skill together which takes time and patience. We strongly recommend you take all the lessons you need now and consider this portion of your wedding planning completed. Then you have the time to practice, practice, practice at home (or in the studio!) and feel very comfortable dancing with each other. You’re welcome to keep it fresh with monthly wedding showcases or you have plenty of time to add another lesson if you need a refresher. Either way, you will be all set without the stress!

How Should We Space Out Our Lessons?

Consistency & frequency will help you learn more quickly

  • Just like any new activity, sport, or study, your brain requires consistent practice in order to progress. We recommend coming in every week. Conversely, we won’t “let you” schedule more than every other week between lessons. Life happens and so we understand that may occur, but it’s our job to set you up for success and we take that job seriously.

Prioritize Wedding Showcases

As you get into your lessons, your instructor will help prepare you for many things you don’t even know to think about. One of the common things we’re sure you’re thinking about is how it will feel to dance in front of others. It’s impossible to prepare for this apart from trying it out, which is why we run a showcase every month!

  • The wedding showcase is an hour-long class the 3rd Saturday every month where you will dance part or all of your first dance in front of other wedding students. You may also get a bit of time at the end to learn a few other social dance steps you can use for the rest of your night.

  • The point is not that you have a finished dance, but that you practice dancing in front of others. We recommend attending as many showcases before your wedding as possible. At the very least, you should attend your first showcase about halfway through your lessons and then once more when you have a lesson or two remaining.

  • If you are finishing your first dance lessons early, we encourage you to attend a wedding showcase each month leading up to your wedding as some extra motivation to keep your dance practiced and fresh.

  • We recommend adding two or more showcases to your account when you purchase so that you commit to the full process upfront.

  • The cost of a showcase is $25 per couple. Free for members!

If you feel like you’re too nervous to even try the showcase, it’s a sure sign you need to sign up! Couples consistently tell us this was one of the most helpful tools in helping them feel confident on their wedding day.

Scheduling

After the first lesson, most couples need to coordinate schedules to see what works. As you look at your calendars, we have a few basic recommendations.

  • Book out as many lessons as you can to ensure you lock in the best times for you. (This is especially true April through September!)

  • Try to book your lessons once a week. Trust us when we say that frequency is your best friend. When you take too long in between lessons, you will spend much more time reviewing rather than learning.

  • Ideally, finish your lessons a month before your wedding and practice, practice, practice.

  • Book as many wedding showcases as you can!

If you don’t relish the ability to book for yourself, we can do it for you! You’re welcome to email us or discuss with your instructor in person.

Important Studio Policies

If you made it this far, I’m impressed! Thanks again for visiting our studio. We will be seeing you quite a bit over the next several weeks and we want you to feel great about dancing with us. Here are a few things we ask all students to commit to:

  1. Bringing a pair of clean, dry shoes to each lesson. Ideally, your wedding shoes! Wet, snowy, or dirty shoes are not permitted on the dance floor (plus they’re hard to dance in).

  2. Cancellation Policy: Please cancel your lesson with at least 24 hours of notice. If you cancel with less than 24 hours notice, for any reason, you will still be charged for your lesson. We ask you to respect this policy and the commitment your instructor and the studio are dedicating to each lesson we schedule and plan for. We note cancellations based on when we receive them, not when we attend to them.

  3. Treat it like a date night! We hope that you will see this as a fun opportunity to learn something new with your partner and maybe even about your partner! If there is something we can do to make your time with us more special, don’t hesitate to let us know.

  4. Avoid correcting and/or criticizing your partner. Have confidence in your instructor’s expertise to guide you both.

  5. Avoid criticizing yourself as learning something new takes time and repetition. Mistakes are a welcome and necessary part of the learning process.
