Dance Teacher + Group Class Admin

Ballroom Dance Chicago seeks a motivated, self-starting, responsible individual to oversee our growing group class program in addition to teaching private and group dance lessons at our Lakeview studio. This full-time position will begin as mostly administrative, focusing on managing operations relating to group class schedules, students, and engagement/marketing, while the candidate goes through dance and teacher training.

A bit about our dance/teacher training:

While we see this as an entry-level position, our philosophy is to facilitate growth in our employees. Responsibilities include:

Group Class Administrative Duties:

  • Oversee group class programming, including the current and future sessions

  • Log attendance & payment as received by the teachers

  • Manage marketing and advertising in collaboration with the Studio Director and Social Media Assistant

  • Plan and schedule future group class sessions based on current and anticipated needs/desires of students

  • Design new programs & events to enhance engagement of current students

  • Oversee daily practice socials

Private Lesson and Group Class Teaching Duties:

  • Plan and develop lesson plans that engage, excite, and inspire beginner dancers

  • Teach tailored private lessons to students looking to dance at their wedding or as a hobby

  • Take notes, track payments, and manage email contact with students

  • Plan and teach fun and engaging group classes

Other Duties:

  • Assist in the upkeep of studio space

  • Pitch in on other projects as necessary

Position / studio hours are Tuesday - Friday: 1-10pm and Saturdays 11am - 5pm.

Compensation is based upon experience.

A successful candidate will have:

  • Experience in management; be it corporate, event, production, program etc.

  • Dance experience (while ballroom dance experience is not required, a strong background in movement is a must)

  • Understanding of how dance classes generally operate and how to get beginners excited about dance. While teaching experience is not required, it is strongly preferred

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Desire to work in a tight-knit team while being self-starting & responsible for their own projects

  • A bright disposition and the ability to find the best solution in tough situations

  • The following qualities: detail oriented, technology-savvy, and forward-thinking

  • A “yes, and” mentality

Dance Teacher + Social Media Assistant

Ballroom Dance Chicago seeks a motivated, self-starting, responsible individual to teach private and group dance lessons at our Lakeview studio, in addition to  overseeing our social media presence. This full-time position will begin as mostly administrative, focusing on creating and managing marketing and social media while the candidate goes through dance and teacher training.

Pay is commensurate upon experience.

Our business hours are Tuesday - Friday from 1-10pm and Saturdays 11am - 5pm.

Marketing & Social Media Responsibilities:

  • Create unique content for our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts

  • Post and maintain social media updates

  • Write and manage newsletter campaigns via MailChimp with direction from the Studio Director

Other Duties:

  • Assist in the upkeep of studio space

  • Pitch in on other projects as necessary

A successful candidate will have:

  • Dance experience (while ballroom dance experience is not required, a strong background in movement is a must)

  • Experience in social media and demonstrated expertise in crafting engaging posts.

  • Understanding of how dance classes generally operate and how to get beginners excited about dance. While teaching experience is not required, it is strongly preferred

Dance Teacher Apprentice

Ballroom Dance Chicago is now accepting applicants for their Apprenticeship program for Winter 2019. All dance and teacher training is provided, and no prior experience is required. The Apprenticeship focuses on engaging students in the fundamental techniques and practices of partner dance with the aim of getting Apprentices to a place where they can teach beginner ballroom/latin dance students by the completion of the Apprenticeship. In addition to receiving dance and teacher training, Apprentices will act as a host at the studio and contribute to the environment by assisting in group classes, greeting incoming students, and lending a hand when necessary. While this is a volunteer position, trainees will receive dance training and individual mentorship, along with gaining insight into running a dance studio. 

Apprentices will gain skills in the following:

  • Fundamental dance techniques and beginning to advanced patterns in Ballroom & Latin dances

  • Effective teaching methods in a one-on-one environment

  • Directing both small and large group dance classes by assisting and shadowing a lead teacher

  • Communicating effectively throughout customer service experiences

  • Professional correspondence with potential clients through both phone and email communications

  • Maintaining a high-end commercial space

  • Fundamental sales techniques and effective communication practices for describing and selling services

A typical Apprentice spends 3 nights a week at the studio (4039B N Ravenswood Ave) for 4-5 hours at a time, for a period of 1-3 months. Time spent at the studio will be dedicated primarily to dance training with a BDC staff member, with additional service training and other studio maintenance tasks assigned as necessary. 

Skills & Qualifications: 

We are looking for applicants who may have limited or no experience in ballroom/latin/partner dance, but a strong desire to learn and build a career in dance. We are looking for individuals who have:

- Strong customer service/interpersonal skills

- Friendly and outgoing personalities

- “Yes, and…” mentalities.

- The ability to adapt to various personalities and situations

- A responsible character

- Willingness to learn and discipline to be self-motivated

- Teaching and movement background is desired, but not required

- Open evening availability, although we are willing to negotiate the work schedule for the right candidate.
